Mac OS X...happily running on my AMD Athlon

At the moment of this writing, I’m in the process of installing Panther. Not on iBook. Not on G5. No my friends, I’m installing it on AMD AthlonXP 1700+ (overclocked to 2450+), under Windows Server 2003 Standard.

For ages I wanted to be able to test my pages and works, write-of-the-PC-desktop, on Mac browsers. I was incredibly happy when company management agreed that buying iBook was in the interest of the quality of web sites we produced. But now, I can run it right of the…oh, I already said that.

Conveniently calling their product PearPC, these guys are converting PowerPC instructions into x86 ones.

Excellent coverage can be found on PearPC.net, with all the latest news, forums and other useful info. Good bit is that pre-release Tiger is also working.

The best part is that it’s not only free, the whole thing is a very small download. Zipped Win binary is 325kB, and rar-ed 6GB and 3GB MacHD images are 440k and 220k. Apart from that, you only need ISO images of the first Panther installation disc - PearPC has Change CD option, but I did not need it. And you need a lot of patience, as installation is taking hours, and is quite CPU consuming. Then again, this is only 0.2 version.

The only thing missing is support for networking on Windows. I believe it would soon be added and then this would be pure fun.

Damn…I just checked the official site and saw that one of the developers died in a train accident… :(( life is really weird. My sincere condolences to the family of Stefan Weyergraf.
