I had 1.2 until a month ago, but did not have time to try, nor I had any idea what to try exactly. And I now upgraded to 1.3 and it's not easy to try now. Good thing to know, though. Geoff, many thanks for sharing this.

One problem with using the 'object tag only' embed type is that older versions of safari (pre 2.0 and 1.3) would ignore the param tags inside the object tag. So if you wanted to pass in Flashvars, or set the stage alignment with the params, or even set the window mode to transparent, safari would not see this and render the Flash movie wrong.

There is also no Plugin detection based on the plugin version. If your user has Flash 6, and your content requires Flash 7, their plugin will still try to render the content, and sometimes that can show a jumbled buggy mess depending on how the movie was created.

Javascript really is the best way to deliver Flash content these days.

I know about that, been using something similar since '03 (the first bookie site I developed). In reality, because of the second mention IE bug we also use Javascript to check for required version and spare the users some waiting time - we output .gif or .jpg instead.

However, my intention was to find an ordinary way of putting Flash out. If it wasn't for the IE problem, this is what I would certainly be using. Even now I output this code from the scripts.

We moved to using <a href="http://blog.deconcept.com/2005/03/31/proper-flash-embedding-flashobject-best-practices/" rel="nofollow">this Javascript method</a> of embedding Flash. Works like a charm, is standards compliant and can serve content according to Flash version, etc... See if it works for you.
