I don't think I have ever seen F1 (or any other racing sport) where champion is decided in the last 10s of the last race in the season.
Fraking fabulous.

Last year, Lewis Hamilton fucked up 17pts lead in the last two races. This year, he had 7pts over Massa and up until 2 laps from the end he looked to be the champion.

Then Vettel passed him and Hamilton did not have any chance to catch him. No chance at all and I was watching in horror how McLaren was going to lose the title again, at the end. I was so horrified that I did not even see that both of them passed Glock two corners from the end. Glock stayed on dry tyres while the rain fell and he barely kept the car – he was 1:44 in the last lap to Hamilton’s 1:24. Gamble from Toyota team that nearly gave them 4th place. Gamble of Toyota team that nearly destroyed McLaren’s year.

I don’t think there was ever a championship decider like this. Man, I still can’t believe what happened. Absolutely amazing, thrilling, fabulous.

McLaren has the Champion, after so many, many years that I lost count. It’s time to celebrate.

After two seasons when he finished just a bit short of the title, mostly due to unreliable McLaren car, Kimi finally won the title thanks to…well, there’s no escaping it: hot-headed, inexperienced and mostly dumb Hamilton. He just needed a quiet race. Nothing fancy. Push only if Fernando goes in front. No, the dumb-ass had to race like a maniac, like it’s first race or middle of the season.

Dumb ass. This must be the worst season in McLaren history. They were on the verge of winning both titles and eventually lost both.

Sincere congratulations to Kimi – he deserved it.

I have not written much about F1 this season, which is rather strange when my favourite team is dominating the championship and their two drivers have the sort of relationship Senna and Prost had when they were driving in the McLaren.

However, after the WMC decision last night, I feel I need to make my stance on this. It’s really simple: it is absolutely stupid, unfounded and unfair decision.

If McLaren was really found guilty, they should have been thrown out, not just this year, but also for the remaining years for which the current rules apply. Since that is not the case, I can only conclude that WMC did not have enough evidence but have to do something. Ferrari was whining and fuming for months, that idiot Briatore just couldn’t keep his big mouth shut, everyone was crying thief.

And they fined McLaren $100 million, minus the money lost out of this year’s money share and effectively shortened McLaren’s budget for the next year for at least 25%. Of course Ferrari whiners are happy – the losers will win the biggest cut of the money and they will have excuses why are they so weak compared to McLaren this year.

I will repeat it, because it is so simple: if they are guilty, do not let them race anymore. Period. Since they are still racing, they are not guilty. Fining McLaren in this unprecedented way makes them look like cheaters. And if that is the case, letting them still race then is like letting doped bikers to continue racing. It is so stupid and idiotic decision that I can’t believe they made it.
Just think: two prime suspects in all this are Nigel Stepney and Mike Coughlan, and they were not asked anything – the only ones speaking were McLaren stuff. How in the hell is that possible, if it wasn’t for the sole desire to punish McLaren no matter what.

I am firmly with Dennis and Haug on this. I have to say this for the who knows what time: Max Mosley and his charade of the governing body are complete idiots and the sooner they leave motor sport the better will all be.

First a double win in Malaysia and then the second place for Hamilton in Bahrain. Frankly, I did not expect them to bounce back so quickly, but it’s a pleasure to watch. Of all ex-Michelin teams, McLaren adapted the best. And Renault the worst. It must be really hurting for them to see them being passed by Toyota and even Red Bull at some point of the race.

Alonso could not have picked better and it could really be that he will win 3rd title with McLaren. But the biggest impression must be Lewis Hamilton. 3rd, 2nd, 2nd – absolutely amazing.

The first race without M. Schumacher and the F1 continues where it left off in 2005: Raikkonen vs Alonso. Coupled with Massa and Hamilton, this looks to be a battle between McLaren and Ferrari once again. Granted that BMW looks good, I think these two teams will be at the centerpiece of the battle.

Ferrari is, without any doubt, a class of its own at the moment. No one could even come close to Kimi and if it wasn’t for mechanical problems in the second Ferrari, this would’ve been 1–2 for them. Alonso was as good as to be expected but my impression of the day is immensely happy Lewis Hamilton in the 3rd position. Fantastic race debut for him with just two minor mistakes.

A good start of the season, things will only get better.

I followed F1 races through this no-posting period and there was plenty of interesting things to see. First, Ferrari resurected themself. First they win in Imola, then they win the European GP – Schumacher masterfully drove both races and defended from Alonso. I might also add that Alonso is amazingly cool-headed driver – he tries few times, sees that is not possible and decides against the risk. He has shown last year that he is great driver and now he shows a lot of common sense.
Not that I like that in a driver – I’m there for excitement, not reason :). Current shitty points system really drives the driver towards such behavior. I much prefer the MotoGP points system.

Spain GP was Alonso’s second dream come through. He is a champion already and now he won – and what a dominant win that was – in front of his home crowd. No one could touch him, no one was even close. Ferrari took 2nd and 3rd and shows that they are very strong again.
McLaren is still in the (now) 3rd league. Not enough speed, not enough strength. Kimi did the funniest moment in the race: he saw on the screens around the track that current camera view is one from his cockpit and waved to the TV viewers. Lunatic, total lunatic. It would be said to see him going away to Ferrari. He also did the best move on the race – initial drive from 9th to 5th between two Toyotas was masterful and very brave thing to do.

Monaco was surprisingly entertaining until the 20 laps from the end when first Webber’s car broke and soon after Kimi’s as well. Montoya was stuck 7 cars after Alonso and thus unable to make a move and the race was decided then. Lots of close driving which was exciting to watch. And of course, how not to mention that idiotic thing Schumacher did in the qualifiying. It was plainly obvious that he did it on purpose, something telemetric data confirmed and was rightfully punished. The best moment of the race – David Coulthard finishing third and then wearing Superman outfit. :) Ferrari got much better in the second part of season and Schumacher did not have to try such stupid tricks – he only had to do what he does best – drive. Everything was really going for them from that moment…apart from few hickups.

Montoya, Alonso, Superman and Briatore

Another surprisingly great race was Hungary GP. Usually a boring race on the track with little overtaking chances proved to be a hell as all the favourites dropped out and Jenson Button finally won, in his 113th race start. The saddest thing for me is that I did not even watch it. I was in London on business and went for a stroll on the Thames bank, thinking that in such motor-crazy country as UK is, there would be no problems to find a bar that is showing the race. To my amazement, I realized that most of the bars are not even open and those that were do not have a TV set. The dumbest thing I saw was that few bars do have TVs, but they are not on and when I asked can they show the race, they said no. One place did have a TV on but they were showing horse riding (not even horse racing) on Sky sports. No one was watching that, but they refused to turn to any channels with the F1 race. There I was, ready to spend my money on lunch and drinks, but they did not even think to change the channel. I mean, really…

Monza, the Italian GP was the place of the biggest announcement in recent F1 years. After more than a decade in the sport, the most famous F1 driver is going into retirement. Along with that, Ferrari announced that Kimi Raikkonen signed a 3-year deal. I strongly believe that Kimi would have stayed in McLaren if Schumacher did not retire, but there you go. I’m sad that my team lose such a good driver, but on the other hand hope that good fortunes that Fernando seems to have with him will not evaporate when he moves to McLaren and there would be something to be happy about. Because this year there was nothing, regarding McLaren. Monza had its bad marks too – Alonso was punished for allegedly blocking Felipe Massa in qualifying even though he was at least 200m in front of him and was actually pushing to the max because he had to start his flying lap before the time runs out – which he did 2s before the end of Q. But, it’s a Ferrari home ground and I’m not suprised that their complaint was taken as true. Schumacher won, Alonso retired due to engine failure and all was red and rosy for the reds.

In China, Renault was again the class of the field and again they beat themself. The same guy that fucked up Alonso’s chances in Hungary did it again here – Alonso lost around 12s in the pit because the mechanic on the rear right tyre had problems to screw it in and it was those 12s that Alonso missed to overtake Schumacher who won this race and jumped to the 1st place in the standings due to one win more than Alonso. That debt however, was repayed in Suzuka. Ferrari was the dominant force, but 12 laps before the end Schumacher’s engine died and Alonso won. With 10pts advantage, only a miracle can snatch the second Championship title from his hands.

Surprisingly eventful race down under, with 4 SC periods. It was amazing to watch how drivers experienced and novice made error after error, all ending up in spectacular crashes.

Alonso demonstrated relentless Renault pace, not allowing one bit of doubt who will dominate the field. Four times he built the time advantage and four times it was shattered by Safety Car coming out to the field. Fisico was out of the win racing early by stalling on the race start.

That event saved Montoya from great embarrassment – he managed to spun at the end of the warm-up lap. He would’ve start from the back of the grid if it wasn’t for the Fisico problem and the repeat of the warm-up lap. But even that flash of fortune was not enough, as Juan Pablo made an error 11 laps from the end on the final turn and damaged the car so much that the engine turned itself off. I must admit that this is the first time I hear about such system and can’t really grasp what is its use. If the car is badly damaged, driver would not be able to drive it as it should be running – reason enough to either pit or park. Really strange.

It was sad watching Montoya trying to talk to anyone from McLaren – Witmarsh (managing director) listened him for barely a minute, while mechanics turned their heads as he tried to talk to them. Unless JP does some really great races towards the end of the season, I think his days in McLaren are numbered after only two years. He made just too many mistakes.

The most tragic loser of the race is certainly Jenson Button. Engine blowout at two turns from the end of the race and car stopping 50m from the finish line – man, that is harsh. In terms of disappointment, this could only count along with Mika Hakkinen’s engine dying 200m from the finish line in Barcelona, few years back.

Toyota is showing signs of improvement. In the last race they scored points and now Ralf drives (with 2-stop strategy + drive-through penalty) to last step on the podium – huge improvement over terrible season start. Williams’ terrible season start (usual for them, actually) continues – I was so very wrong thinking that Cosworth V8 will help them; this Cosworth is far from the legendary V8 that terrorized competitors for over 20 years in the 60′s-80′s.

Interesting thing to point out is that Renault and McLaren are the only teams not having tyre temperature problems. Honda and Toyota are/were the most vocal about their cars not being able to raise the tyre temp to the required limits. Toyota seems to have resolved that problem (that was the real reason of their poor performance in Bahrain) but Honda seems nowhere close to solution

All teams will have two testing sessions now, before Imola comes and EU campaign starts. Last season title was decided on first 2–3 EU races; we’ll see what will happen now.
