The Blog

Download aplus theme

Current design of my blog is made as WP theme, but with lots of elements that would not make sense to someone else. As such, it was not suitable to be offered for download. I started working on drop-in ready theme, but did not have much time to spend on it.

WordPress theme competition, initiated by Alex King, urged me to finish this up and now you can download aplus theme and use if you like.

The theme is not identical to what I use here, but keeps all its good parts. Time since and time of day plugins are integrated into the theme, as well as ADxMenu with this current design. Theme can easily be customized – you can change the photo, move elements around – if you know your way through CSS, you’ll have no problems.

Theme uses gravatars just like this one is, but don’t worry if you don’t have Gravatar plugin. The code will first check for the existence of the plugin. I put CUSTOMIZE: in few files. There you can put your own stuff, like I did with Sparks box on the home page.

There are several page templates, which are used for monthly and category archives, feeds and themes.

You can check the theme first, using theme switcher in the top menu.
Download and enjoy. Please report back problems you experience with the theme.

I initially published this as GPL, since I wanted to enter the competition. However, it seems that ADxMenu.htc, which is published under CC Attribution can’t be included inside of GPL-licensed theme. This does not affect the theme usage – all my content is published as CC-BY, so you can use it anyway.

If I sort this out, I’ll update it here.

    Hi from Portugal!
I love Yasmeen Ghauri and find you because of her!
I loved the way you used Yasmeen in your site. Congratulations!!!!
Also see that you have a theme that we may download. I really want to put the theme in my blog (http://heartzinha.blogs.sapo.pt/) but I think it does not Work!
It’s Yasmeen anniversary today isn’t it?

Love the new design, but the cover girl shot sort of makes the site less reading-at-work-friendly

  5. Hi Aleksandar

Kudos for a great theme. I was so delighted to see this theme, that I immediately copied it to my Hindi blog

    http://hindi.pnarula.com/haanbhai

I am still working on replacing the header girl image with a more work-friendly photo :D I am finding it difficult to create the same fade/soft focus effect for my image.

    Cheers
    Pankaj

Hehe, it is. :) It seems I’m not the only one remembering Yasmeen’s birthday.

Guys, I have a genuine problem to understand the issue about the photo. I mean, one thing is to surf the porn sites, but this is…benign (for the lack of better term). In all the companies I worked there was never an issue of what you surf and visit, as long as you finish your job and your coworkers are not offended.
I think I’m gonna return Kubrick back online because of this, so you can choose it at work and access my site when needed. I first need to add my stuff and links to it.

Pankaj, I usually start from huge photo, about two or more times larger than the end size I’m gonna use. Loosely cut out the surrounding area and apply more and more soft-brush eraser until (more or less) only the part I want is visible. Then, when I resize the photo, imprefections get lost in the process and with few finishing touches it can blend well with background. Of course, it always helps to choose the background colour that fits the overal mood of the image. :)
And I have another theme in works, centering around lovely Yasmeen’s photo which will feature warmer colours (Too many blue here — that’s why the downloadable theme has more contrasting colours).

It does not always work and I, quite often, throw away days of work. But when it works, it’s really self-rewarding.

    Excellent!
    I am really impressed.

nice piece of work, keep it up.

  8. Kaori says:

    I love your theme :)
I’m playing around with it now, trying to figure out how to move the menus on the right over 50 pixels, just so some of my larger images don’t get cut off…

I’d be happy if you had any tips :)
Right now, my IE users get the ‘Active Discussions’ and ‘Sparks’ sitting at the very bottom of the page (when I have large images in my post)

    Thanks again! It looks terrific!

  9. Aleksandar says:

Kaori, look for #sidebar rule and change the value of left to what you need.

Such IE behavior is expected :( — expanding floats bug. That’s why I use separate div for images and set width on it plus overflow:auto.

  10. Kaori says:

    Thanks Aleksandar,

I’ve been playing with it a little bit.. That dang IE thing is a problem :) hahahahah
Do I need a special script to detect browser and then use CSS properly? Or does your theme automatically do that, assuming both CSS sets are on the server?
Once again, you definately designed the BEST theme for wordpress!!!

  11. Aleksandar says:

IE-only rules are located in ie.css and you don’t need any additional scripts — it is loaded automatically.

  12. David says:

from one wordpress hacker to another, you’ve really done some neat, yet simple, stuff with your layout. kudos!

  13. DC says:

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/blog/8URX618D/htdocs/wp-content/themes/aplus/aplus.php on line 116

Any idea why I am getting this error message?

  14. Aleksandar says:

DC, I think it’s because you don’t have any comments at all in the system. Additional check is needed for that and for each should be wrapped in:
    if ($comments) {
    ...
    }

I have updated the theme archive with this fix. I haven’t really tested it in situation you have (no time to install fresh WP to try) but I’m pretty sure that was the problem.

  15. DC says:

Excellent! That worked… thanks for that Aleksandar

  16. Fyr says:

Astounding theme!!! FINALLY — one that suits me perfectly. Can I replace with my own images? This is GREAT work… Thanks.

  17. Aleksandar says:

    Sure Fyr, fire on.

  18. La Bella says:

Wow! I’ve looked and LOOKED for that perfect wordpress template and I think I’ve finally found it.
This is the most beautiful one yet that I’ve seen. Thank you for sharing it… really. Thank You.
It’s beautiful and I’m glad you allow me to use it.
    :-)
Keep up the great work and I wish I could use the one you have now.… hehehe
But I’m sure it’s your personal template.
    It’s gorgeous as well.
    Hugs*
    Ana

  19. La Bella says:

oops! Forgot to mention I will be using this one at http://www.littleovulation.net
    Oopsie! Forgot! hehe

  20. Just a big thank you for creating this template. It’s easy to use and easy to read. The text over the photo adds neat 3d effect. Cool.

    Simple is good!

  21. Sensue says:

I have tried so hard to get your theme to work. It looks amazing and I was quite able to replace your images. However, the “folders” for each category seem to be missing. Prior to adding your theme, I had an ‘archive’ and it disappeared. I’m really confused. I want this to work so badly, please help.

  22. Sensue says:

I figured out the “archive” problem, but that still leads me to the “folder” issue for each category. On your site, you seem to be able to pull up a list…I’m not sure why mine is not allowing me to do so. Did you create something new? Like a new folder/php file?

  23. Aleksandar says:

Sensue, I use mod_rewrite feature of the Apache, which WP supports. In options, I use this as permalink structure: /%category%/%postname%/ which automatically creates such folders.

  24. Sensue says:

Mod_rewrite? I hope you don’t mind me asking, but how do I install that feature? Do I need to add in the permalink structure? I’m sorry to be asking this, this is the first time that I’m using wordpress, so I’m still trying to get the hang of it.

  25. Sensue says:

Thank you so much for your patience.

  26. Aleksandar says:

Sensue, mod_rewrite is not a WordPress feature, it’s Apache web server feature and I can’t help you with that install. You set the permalink structure as I said — if it works then it works. If not, then you should contact you hosting provider about it.

  27. Srinath says:

Wowo thx for it !!! really simple and clean !!

  28. Sandy says:

I love this theme of yours. I just downloaded aplus and personalized it, but I don’t seem to have my “pages” showing up anywhere. Can you tell me where I might have gone wrong? Is there some simple php code I could now insert into one of the file to make this appear? Your creative talents are truly appreciated. Let me know when this current theme of ‘aplus Lady’ appears as a download!!! [smile]

  29. Aleksandar says:

Sandy, I have provided the page templates. What you need to do is go to Pages feature in WP admin and create page based on particular template.

    Hello!

What a beautiful theme. Very well done. I downloaded it and added my own photo and I just love how it looks.

One thing that I wanted to ask is about the sidebar cards. Is it possible to use the colors (pale blue) that you have instead of the tan colored ones on my blog now?

The other thing that does not seem to show up is the sidebarsep.

    Any help would be appreciated.

And thanks so mcuh for creating such a gorgeous theme.

  32. Thanks for the post! I added it to a page I’m working on! I generally look to other blogs to get new ideas for fresh pages.
