AWStats log analysis

DreamHost, where all my sites are located, offer Analog log analyzer as your window into visits demography. Analog is not bad, but it has horrible user interface and it seems it is not developed anymore.

A much better alternative is AWStats, which is not only free, but actively developed too. I have installed the 6.5, latest stable version and for now only have the last 24h data. Interesting stuff, nonetheless :)

Relaxed dead centre layout

This post is more of a reminder for me than anything new, as I need this splash thing from time to time and never can remember where I keep it.

95% of code is from Dušan Janovský. I merely simplified it, thus instead of 3 or 4 nested divs, you need just one div, for the actual content. html and body play the role of table and table-cell respectivelly. Pure semantics. :)
For IE6 and IE7, I opted for the expression property, masked under conditional comments. No other solution I encountered is flexible enough.

This solution has 100% of the available height to spread, because there is no fixed height set for the content div.

ReviewMe review

ReviewMe characterReviewMe.com is service which got me thinking a lot. And not only me, as the buzz is rather large on my part of the blogosphere… I have seen a lot of online and even more paper “reviews” that are nothing more than a copy/pasted PR material received from the manufacturer. Sometimes it’s easy to sense that just from reading, and sneakier ones are written better – you sign-up/order and then realize that the reviewer did not even try the product otherwise you would not be asking yourself “how in the hell he did not notice this”.

However, this actually boils down to the reviewer. Such reviews would quickly diminish his credibility, which in turn will render the money advertisers give him a wasted money, as it has no desired effect at all. I have written quite a few reviews / thoughts here, with little care for politically correct speaking. If I like something I say it blatantly, if I dislike it I say it even more and if it really goes on my nerves I’m throwing stones.

In here lies the biggest potential issue for the ReviewMe. Will authors keep their self-respect or will they bend and soften the style in order not to scare off potential advertisers? Only time will tell that, but it’s an issue I believe ReviewMe should be aware of.
I damn well know I won’t change.

Ads and affiliates

As you the select few regular visitors :) have no doubt noticed, I started experimenting with various affiliate links and ads. There are way too many ads at the moment, but bear with me – I’m conducting an experiment.

Mighty Mouse

Ever since I decided to ditch the desktop for the laptop, I was looking for the wireless mouse I will use with my future mobile platform. Since my choice of laptops (ultra-portable) has very limited amount of USB ports (Sony SZ has two) I did not want to permanently occupy one of them with USB receiver for the mouse.
This ruled out majority of mouses out there and left me searching Bluetooth options.
In reality, there were two: Microsoft and Logitech. All the others was not really good ones and all belonged to entry level class. However, both MS Intellimouse and Logitech MX900 are designed for the right-hand users and I happen to use the mouse with my left hand. I am right-handed person but I strongly believe that mouse should be used with left hand as that is more comfortable than the usual way. I eventually bought MX900.

For its own, it is an excellent mouse, which works on practically any surface, even mat-black as my working table. However, it soon became obvious that it was very battery consuming and it having a charging cradle naturally leads me to think it’s a BT mouse aimed to be used in desktop situations.
